Nice is not just about city life! If you love hiking,
here are some amazing trails:
Nice and the Côte d’Azur have a public face everyone knows — the Promenade, the rosé, the glamour. But the city I live in has a quieter, more layered side: hidden underground passages, speakeasy bars behind church doors, ancient frescoes tucked above doorways, and secret gardens that most visitors walk straight past. These are the places I share with guests who want to go beyond the postcard.
🏛️ Culture & Hidden Treasures
⛪ The Russian Orthodox Cathedral — A Secret Piece of Imperial Russia
Built by Tsarina Alexandra herself, who loved escaping the harsh Russian winters in our Mediterranean climate, this cathedral is a masterpiece of color, onion domes, and gilded mosaics. It is more than a monument — it is a piece of living history, just minutes from my home. Most visitors to Nice never step inside. You should.
🎨 The Chagall Museum — More Personal Than You’d Expect
After the Matisse Museum, take a short stroll to discover the Chagall Museum in Cimiez. Vibrant colors, poetic biblical scenes, and pure Mediterranean light blend into a deeply moving experience. Even the building, partly designed in consultation with Chagall himself, feels like a work of art. The audio guide here is, for once, genuinely excellent — take it.
🏰 Palais Lascaris — The Forgotten Palace
Tucked on Rue Droite in the Old Town, this 17th-century aristocratic mansion holds one of the richest collections of historical musical instruments in France — lutes, harpsichords, hurdy-gurdies — in extraordinary baroque salons. My secret tip for Rue Droite: as you walk, look up above the tiny art gallery at number 15. You’ll find the oldest sculpted façade in Nice — an ancient fresco of Adam and Eve, hidden in plain sight for centuries.
💀 The Catacombs of Nice — Beneath Castle Hill
Few people know that beneath Castle Hill lie underground galleries — remnants of a medieval cemetery that reveal Nice’s role as a fortified city before Louis XIV had its walls demolished in 1706. Guided tours run Wednesday to Sunday, last 55 minutes, and cost €8. A genuinely fascinating and rarely crowded experience. Book tickets here — 7 Rue Raoul Bosio, 06300 Nice.
🍸 Secret Bars & Hidden Nightlife
🚪 Bethel Bar — Nice’s Speakeasy
There is no sign. You’ll have to know where you’re going. Behind a church door on Place du Jésus in Vieux Nice, cross a corridor in a former 18th-century Jesuit college, find your way to a forgotten little courtyard bathed in candlelight — and you’re in Nice’s most exclusive secret bar. Stone walls, low lighting, and excellent wine in an atmosphere unlike anything else in the city. 1 Place du Jésus, Nice.
🍹 Zitto Cocktail Club — The Anonymous Speakeasy
At 5 Quai des Docks, Zitto is the kind of bar that has no anonymous decoration by accident. The handcrafted cocktails are served with Italian flair and real creativity, in a moody, stylish setting that opens from Wednesday. Come dressed, come curious, come ready to be surprised.
✨ Bonus Hidden Gems
🍷 Café 1860 — A Wine Cave in Time
Tucked in a historic cellar at 7 Rue Raoul Bosio, Café 1860 feels like stepping into another century — wood-paneled walls, guided tastings of regional and rare French wines, in one of the most intimate and authentic spots in Nice. A true local secret.
🐾 The Belle Époque Dog Drinking Bowls
Did you know that Nice’s Belle Époque buildings still feature small stone troughs set into the walls at ground level? These were built to offer water to the horses and dogs of elegant companions in an era when elegance extended to one’s animals. Look closely at the bases of buildings on Boulevard de Cimiez, Avenue Félix Faure, and the corner of Maréchal Joffre — a discreet detail from a more courteous time.
🌿 La Coulée Verte / Promenade du Paillon
An urban green corridor built over the covered Paillon river, stretching through the heart of Nice. Since its major extension in October 2025, the park now reaches all the way to the Palais des Expositions — adding 8 extra hectares and 3,500 new trees to what was already one of Nice’s best-kept secrets. That’s now about a full hour of walking through modern gardens, Roman ruins, olive groves, and fountains, all on a flat, shaded path. Locals use it daily. Tourists almost never find it. Come here to rest, read, or simply breathe — and take the whole extended route if you have time.
🏛️ Place Garibaldi — The Trompe-l’Œil Secrets
Nice’s most elegant square rewards those who look closely. The ochre arcades hide painted illusions — fake windows, pretzel-shaped decorations, and architectural trompe-l’œil that blur the line between what’s real and what’s painted. Find the Chanel double-C logo hidden in the ironwork — left, it’s said, by a seamstress who worked here. Take your aperitif at one of the terrace cafes and play spot-the-illusion.
